Located in the northwestern side of the Sierra of Tramuntana, the municipality of Deià is the fifth smallest town council of Mallorca, with a surface of 15.11 km2. It has a population of 840 inhabitants (2007), with a density below the average of most municipalities on the island. It has an average temperature of 17° C, is rainy in winter and is frequently under the influence of the winds coming from mestral, tramuntana y gregal (NW, N, NE).

Although small, Deià is one of the best known municipalities of Mallorca outside our borders. It has been visited by such illustrious people as the Archduke Luís Salvador de Austria, author of "Die Balearen", who acquired most of the large properties (possessions) which still remain. Other illustrious guests of Deià were the writer Robert Graves, who spent his last years in the town and now rests in the churchyard, writers Laura Riding and Julio Cortázar, musicians Mike Oldfield and Kevin Ayers, artists Paul Hogarth and Matti Klarwein and businessman Richard Branson, who refurbished the possessions of Son Moragues and Son Canal to create the well-knwon hotel La Residencia.

A winding road leads to Deià from Palma, skirting the coast after crossing Valldemossa. The same road that leads to Deià follows up to Llucalcari and Sòller. It is possible to get to Deià easily by car, motorbike or bus.
